Rug Cleaning and Restoration Services in Manhattan

Cleaning, repair and restoration for oriental, Persian, wool and area rugs. Every rug is inspected by hand before any work begins.

Oriental and Persian Rug Cleaning

Hand-knotted rugs are washed by hand, with the method set by the fibre, the dye and the age of the weave.

Each rug is dusted before water is introduced, then tested for dye stability and washed with a pH suited to wool or silk.

What is included

  • Fibre, dye and construction inspection
  • Dry soil extraction before washing
  • Hand wash with controlled pH and temperature
  • Flat, controlled drying and pile grooming

Area and Wool Rug Cleaning

Wool, cotton and synthetic area rugs are cleaned off the floor, so soil is flushed out rather than pushed deeper.

Backings and bindings are checked first, as loose construction needs a gentler wash than a tightly woven rug.

What is included

  • Pre-inspection of backing and binding
  • Full dusting of both faces
  • Deep wash and rinse to the foundation
  • Fringe and edge finishing

Rug Repair and Restoration

Damage is stabilised before it spreads: worn ends, splits, holes and thin pile are rebuilt on the loom by hand.

Materials are selected to match the original wool or silk in weight, twist and colour.

What is included

  • Structural assessment and written scope
  • Foundation repair on warp and weft
  • Pile reknotting to the original density
  • Colour matching to surrounding field

Fringe, Binding and Reweaving

Fringe and selvedges take the first damage in a busy room, and they are also what make a rug look neglected.

We rebuild ends, secure knots and re-wrap sides so the finish reads as part of the original rug.

What is included

  • Fringe repair, replacement or shortening
  • Selvedge and side-cord re-wrapping
  • End stops to prevent further unravelling
  • Reweaving of missing knots

Pet Odor and Stain Removal

Pet contamination sits in the foundation, not the pile, so surface treatment only hides it until humidity brings it back.

The rug is flushed through the foundation and treated so odor is removed rather than masked.

What is included

  • Moisture and contamination mapping
  • Full-immersion flush of the foundation
  • Odor treatment and neutralising rinse
  • Spot correction on remaining staining

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How often should a rug be professionally cleaned?

Most rugs in a Manhattan home should be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Rugs in entryways, hallways or homes with pets and children benefit from an annual wash, while a rug in a formal room used lightly can go two years. Regular vacuuming between washes removes the dry grit that wears the pile from underneath.

Is hand washing safer than machine cleaning for antique and silk rugs?

Yes. Hand washing is the safer method for antique, silk and natural-dye rugs because water temperature, pH and agitation are controlled at every step. Machine lines apply uniform pressure and heat, which can fray fringe, distort the weave and cause dyes to migrate. Silk in particular loses lustre when it is over-agitated, so it is washed by hand and dried flat under supervision.

How does pickup and delivery work for an apartment building?

We collect the rug from your apartment at no charge and return it the same way, coordinating with your building in advance. We arrange the time window with you, notify the front desk if required, use the service entrance and elevator where the building asks for it, and roll and wrap the rug in your home. On delivery we lay the rug back in place and reset any furniture we moved.

How long does a rug cleaning take?

A standard wash takes seven to ten days from pickup to delivery. That covers inspection, dusting, washing, controlled drying and final grooming, and drying is the part that cannot be shortened without risking the fibre. Repair or restoration work is quoted separately and can add one to several weeks depending on the extent of the reweaving.

What affects the price of rug cleaning or restoration?

Price is set by size, fibre, construction and the condition of the rug. A wool machine-made area rug costs less per square foot than a hand-knotted silk piece that needs controlled washing. Pet contamination, heavy staining, fringe rebuilding, binding and reweaving are priced as additional work, and every quote is given after inspection rather than over the phone.
